Part 1: Backend portion of a change broken into 2 PRs.
Part 2: #25077
Adds three new UserAppearanceSettings fields (theme_mode, theme_light,
theme_dark) on top of the existing theme_preference and terminal_font.
Replaces GetUserThemePreference and GetUserTerminalFont with a single
GetUserAppearanceSettings aggregate query. The PUT handler is wrapped in
db.InTx so sync-mode's mode + slot writes can never half-apply.
Adds an Agents General setting to require Cmd/Ctrl+Enter before sending
chat messages. When enabled, plain Enter inserts a newline in agent chat
inputs while the send button remains available.
The preference is now persisted server-side through
`/api/v2/users/{user}/preferences`, alongside the existing user
preference settings, and is applied to both the create-agent input and
existing chat composer. Storybook and API coverage verify the setting,
keyboard behavior, validation, and persistence.

## What
Adds per-user per-model auto-compaction threshold overrides. Users can
now customize the percentage of context window usage that triggers chat
compaction, independently for each enabled model.
## Why
The compaction threshold was previously only configurable at the
deployment level (`chat_model_configs.compression_threshold`). Different
users have different preferences — some want aggressive compaction to
keep costs low, others prefer higher thresholds to retain more context.
This gives users control without requiring admin intervention.
## Architecture
**Storage:** Reuses the existing `user_configs` table (no migration
needed). Overrides are stored as key/value pairs with keys shaped
`chat_compaction_threshold:<modelConfigID>` and integer percent values.
**API:** Three new experimental endpoints under
`/api/experimental/chats/config/`:
- `GET /user-compaction-thresholds` — list all overrides for the current
user
- `PUT /user-compaction-thresholds/{modelConfig}` — upsert an override
(validates model exists and is enabled, validates 0–100 range)
- `DELETE /user-compaction-thresholds/{modelConfig}` — clear an override
(idempotent)
**Runtime resolution:** In `coderd/chatd/chatd.go`, a new
`resolveUserCompactionThreshold()` helper runs at the start of each chat
turn (inside `runChat()`), after the model config is resolved but before
`CompactionOptions` is built. If a valid override exists, it replaces
`modelConfig.CompressionThreshold`. The threshold source
(`user_override` vs `model_default`) is logged with each compaction
event.
**Precedence:** `effectiveThreshold = userOverride ??
modelConfig.CompressionThreshold`
**UI:** New "Context Compaction" subsection in the Agents → Settings →
Behavior tab, placed after Personal Instructions. Shows one row per
enabled model with the system default, a number input for the override,
and Save/Reset controls.
## Testing
- 9 API subtests covering CRUD, validation (boundary values 0/100,
out-of-range rejection), upsert behavior, idempotent delete, user
isolation, and non-existent model config
- 4 dbauthz tests (16 scenarios) verifying `ActionReadPersonal` /
`ActionUpdatePersonal` on all query methods
- 4 Storybook stories with play functions (Default, WithOverrides,
Loading, Error)
<details>
<summary>Implementation plan</summary>
### Phase 1 — Tests
- Backend API tests in `coderd/chats_test.go` (9 subtests)
- Database auth wrapper tests in
`coderd/database/dbauthz/dbauthz_test.go` (4 methods)
- Frontend stories in `UserCompactionThresholdSettings.stories.tsx` (4
stories)
### Phase 2 — Backend preference surface
- 4 SQL queries in `coderd/database/queries/users.sql` (list, get,
upsert, delete)
- `make gen` to propagate into generated artifacts
- Auth/metrics wrappers in dbauthz and dbmetrics
- SDK types and client methods in `codersdk/chats.go`
- HTTP handlers and routes in `coderd/chats.go` and `coderd/coderd.go`
- Key prefix constant shared between handlers and runtime
### Phase 3 — Runtime override
- `resolveUserCompactionThreshold()` helper in `coderd/chatd/chatd.go`
- Override injection in `runChat()` before building `CompactionOptions`
- `threshold_source` field added to compaction log
### Phase 4 — Settings UI
- API client methods and React Query hooks in `site/src/api/`
- `UserCompactionThresholdSettings` component extracted from
`SettingsPageContent`
- Per-model mutation tracking (only the active row disables during save)
- 100% warning, "System default" label, helpful empty state copy
### Phase 5 — Refactor and review fixes
- Consolidated key prefix constant in `codersdk`
- Explicit PUT range validation (not just struct tags)
- GET handler gracefully skips malformed rows instead of 500
- Boundary value, upsert, and non-existent model config tests
- UX improvements: per-model mutation state, aria-live on errors

Introduce a three-way workspace sharing setting (none, everyone,
service_accounts) replacing the boolean workspace_sharing_disabled.
In service_accounts mode, only service account-owned workspaces can be
shared while regular members' share permissions are removed. Adds a
new organization-service-account system role with per-org permissions
reconciled alongside the existing organization-member system role.

Adds a user-level custom prompt to the database.
I'll be doing a follow-up for the UI, as we currently do not have
user-level settings (it's just admin). I'll also make it very obvious
for chats where there is a user-level prompt, but I don't know how yet.
Closes#21044
This pull-request addresses an issue we were seeing where we would
attempt to filter the `<UserCombobox />` by the users username or email
not their username (which the rendered options would show).
To highlight this I created three different users. Each with a username
that did not contain their `email` or `name` and attempted to filter.
Attempting to search for `John` wouldn't actually show the user as his
username was `x`, and infact whereas a subset of users might be returned
from the backend for having `john` in the `email` it would've been
filtered by the frontend for not being in the `name` field.
| Name | Username |
| --- | --- |
| `Jake` | `z` |
| `Jeff` | `y` |
| `John` | `x` |
| Previously | Now |

fixes#21303
Update user last_seen_at when we mark them active on login. This prevents a narrow race where they can be re-marked dormant and fail to log in.
## Problem
Users may not realize that task notifications are disabled by default.
To improve awareness, we show a warning alert on the Tasks page when all
task notifications are disabled.
**Alert visibility logic:**
- Shows when **all** task notification templates (Task Working, Task
Idle, Task Completed, Task Failed) are disabled
- Can be dismissed by the user, which stores the dismissal in the user
preferences API
- If the user later enables any task notification in Account Settings,
the dismissal state is cleared so the alert will show again if they
disable all notifications in the future

## Changes
- Added a warning alert to the Tasks page when all task notifications
are disabled
- Introduced new `/users/{user}/preferences` endpoint to manage user
preferences (stored in `user_configs` table)
- Alert is dismissible and stores the dismissal state via the new user
preferences API endpoint
- Enabling any task notification in Account Settings clears the
dismissal state via the preferences API
- Added comprehensive Storybook stories for both TasksPage and
NotificationsPage to test all alert visibility states and interactions

#15896 Mentions ability to add support for filtering by login type
The issue mentions that backend API support exists but the backend did
not seem to have the support for this filter. So I have added the
ability to filter it.
I also added a corresponding update to readme file to make sure the docs
will correctly showcase this feature
Pre-requisite for https://github.com/coder/coder/pull/16891
Closes https://github.com/coder/internal/issues/515
This PR introduces a new concept of a "system" user.
Our data model requires that all workspaces have an owner (a `users`
relation), and prebuilds is a feature that will spin up workspaces to be
claimed later by actual users - and thus needs to own the workspaces in
the interim.
Naturally, introducing a change like this touches a few aspects around
the codebase and we've taken the approach _default hidden_ here; in
other words, queries for users will by default _exclude_ all system
users, but there is a flag to ensure they can be displayed. This keeps
the changeset relatively small.
This user has minimal permissions (it's equivalent to a `member` since
it has no roles). It will be associated with the default org in the
initial migration, and thereafter we'll need to somehow ensure its
membership aligns with templates (which are org-scoped) for which it'll
need to provision prebuilds; that's a solution we'll have in a
subsequent PR.

Add the `--github-user-id` option to `coder users list`, which makes the
command only return users with a matching GitHub user id. This will
enable https://github.com/coder/start-workspace-action to find a Coder
user that corresponds to a GitHub user requesting to start a workspace.
Relates to https://github.com/coder/coder/issues/14232
This implements two endpoints (names subject to change):
- `/api/v2/users/otp/request`
- `/api/v2/users/otp/change-password`
* chore: add github.com user id association
This will eventually be used to show an indicator in the UI
to star the repository if you've been using Coder for a while
and have not starred the repo.
If you have, we'll never show a thing!

Rolename should avoid having the org_id appended.
Wipes all existing organization role assignments, which should not be used anyway.
